Mature O-RAN specifications allow implementation of many advanced features in existing 4G-5G Radio Access Networks.

‍

6G is not expected to be another disruptive “shiny new box.” It must evolve pragmatically from 5G - preserving investments while advancing AI-native capabilities, scalable interfaces and software-driven innovation.

‍

The focus for 2026 and beyond is on consolidation of O-RAN specification work for updating EXISTING 5G NETWORKS.

At the O-RAN ALLIANCE Summit during MWC Barcelona 2026, operators and vendors openly discussed their shift toward AI-native Radio Access Networks.

At the MWC26 O-RAN ALLIANCE Summit, operators shared where they stand in their RAN transformation journeys.

Since November 2025, O-RAN Work Groups and Focus Groups published 71 technical documents, bringing the total to 147 unique titles. Four documents represent new titles.

O-RAN ALLIANCE participants showcase 24 open and intelligent RAN solutions throughout MWC Barcelona 2026 and at the O-RAN Virtual Exhibition.

In 2025, the O-RAN ALLIANCE Security Work Group (WG11) achieved major accomplishments that further strengthened the O-RAN security posture.

‍

Our first 6G workshop, held in Dallas in October 2025, formally initiated the structured and collaborative approach to O-RAN ALLIANCE’s contribution to an open, intelligent 6G, and to aligning O-RAN’s 6G readiness with 3GPP’s evolving 6G work.
