1-5 June 2026 was a busy week, as the O-RAN ALLIANCE held its F2F meeting in Seattle, WA, USA.
Focus was on specifications enabling the acceleration of deployment of open and intelligent RAN in 4G-5G networks:
The Release O-RAN-R006 was formulated, targeting delivery in July 2027. It contains 9 features for 5G networks, with near-term priority on the Decoupled SMO Foundation and Shared-O-RU. O-RAN-R006 will be the first release that also contains 6G study features and study items.
O-RAN ALLIANCE's 6G study program further defined 6 tracks for ensuring that 6G is open and intelligent from the start: 6G Use Case and Requirements, 6G Architecture, 6G Fronthaul, 6G Management & Automation, 6G O-Cloud Evolution, 6G Security. Significant progress was made in the 6G Use Case & Requirements study, with 18 contributions.
Other key areas also made progress: Definition of the O-RAN Security Assurance Program, O-RAN's leadership in ZTA security for RAN, intelligence architecture for AI RAN, directions for satellite-based Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), and more.
The O-RAN nGRG and ISAC workshop, collocated with the F2F meetings, attracted more than 200 participants and delivered many interesting presentations from diverse industry players. See the event web page for details: link.
All O-RAN ALLIANCE work is done through voluntary contributions of our members and participants. It is great to see such high enthusiasm and industry commitment to the principles of network openness, intelligence, virtualization and interoperability.
