65 Demonstrations of O-RAN technology and Solutions at MWC23 Showcasing the O-RAN Ecosystem Progress

58 O-RAN ALLIANCE members and participants plan to present 65 demonstrations of their O-RAN based technology and solutions at MWC Barcelona 2023 or the O-RAN Virtual Exhibition, and welcome visitors to join their booths.

O-RAN ALLIANCE prepared an interactive map for easy navigation to booths showcasing O-RAN demos at MWC exhibition.

Intelligent RAN control demonstrations at MWC Barcelona 2023 include

  • Capgemini and Intel showcase energy-saving O-RAN rApp, that significantly reduces power consumption in O-RU by intelligently switching off/on one or more cells and/or carriers using O1 and/or Open fronthaul M-plane parameter configurations, based on cell load prediction. Off/on switching is accompanied with  appropriate traffic steering, to ensure service-continuity and quality-of-service.

  • Capgemini and VIAVI jointly present a solution with the VIAVI Location Intelligence xApp and rApp on Capgemini’s cloud-native Near-RT and Non-RT RIC platforms. This provides complete control of expected QoE when optimizing the network. The VIAVI Location Intelligence r/xApp provides foundational capability on RIC by offering highly granular performance & QoE measures for all subscribers and devices.

  • Capgemini and PiWorks present the joint solution with PiWorks’s RSI rAPP on Capgemini’s cloud native Non-RT RIC platform. This RSI rApp on RIC framework provides capability to monitor RACH Index values for all the cells and provides complete control to tackle the challenge of cell performance in dense urban area.

  • China Mobile demonstrates O-RAN Prototype along with Near-RT RIC and O-Cloud that is consistent with the performance of traditional RAN. In addition, along with the Near-RT RIC, the prototype can provice the intelligent capability to realize SLA assurance of industry service.

  • China Mobile and H3C demonstrate an O-RAN based Pravite 5G solution for Industry, including disaggregated network components and RAN Intelligent Controller, with a field trial in a factory to realize the of application-level SLA assurance.

  • China Mobile, Southeast University and Purple Mountain Laboratories jointly demonstrate O-RAN based RAN Slice SLA assurance use case, with a general design of xApp and RIC APIs, which provides a good xApp design reference for the industry. Finally, a slicing SLA assurance xApp is showed by a testing.

  • HCLTech demonstrates Bouncer xApp, which is a Near-RT RIC benchmarking xApp deployed on Near-RT RIC along with  VIAVI RIC Test as E2 node emulator in order to show the scenario when the E2 node numbers can be scaled in count of 100, 500, 1000 or more by using E2AP functional procedures. RIC Subscription request, RIC Indication are the E2AP messages used for benchmarking scenarios.  In this demo 50 E2 nodes are configured from E2 node and for the same numbers, E2AP Functional procedures are performed. The communication between the xApp and E2 node(VIAVI RIC Test) is done over E2 interface.

  • ITRI develops an AI-Driven Non-RT RIC which supports A1/R1 and SMO framework interfaces and provides AI/ML operation tool for rApp to complete AI/ML workflow. In this demonstration, we present the management of rApp lifecycle and the training process of a drone position prediction model which can be used for deciding handover policy.

  • Juniper Networks demonstrates a standard compliant O-RAN SMO that is purpose built for 5G network slicing to enable communication service providers to provision, manage, and monetize custom network services on demand. The demo showcases O-RAN SMO capabilities such as O-RAN FOCOM, NFO, and RAN Slice SLA Assurance rApp/xApp.

  • Juniper Networks demonstrates Energy Savings rApp/xApp on top of O-RAN compliant RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) platform enabling service providers to deliver all the mobile services but still meet their sustainability targets.

  • Lenovo presents a Deep Learning based solution that dynamically anticipate overload situations by means of a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. This demo validates the solution in the RIC platform integrated with an E2 Node Agent software emulator.

  • NYCU demonstrates an Indoor and Outdoor Positioning Use Case. The proposed hybrid positioning scheme over O-RAN and 3GPP R15 infrastructure, it presents the same accuracy level to 3GPP R16. The proposed AI-assisted analysis of the positioning mechanism utilizes UE assistance information from MEC. The Real Scenarios in the academic field can be found in this demo.

  • The Open6G team at Northeastern University demonstrates zTouch, a zero-touch intent-based framework for Open RAN neutral host and private cellular applications. zTouch is designed to make complex tasks, such as managing, monitoring, and controlling 5G systems, simple and intuitive through a zero-touch intent-based automation platform.

  • Reply demonstrates a sample of E2, A1, Dashboard and gRPC API capabilities which are supported by the Reply xApp through which users can monitor and control the xApps’ behaviour, as the foundation on which Reply can aid operators and vendors to develop custom RAN optimisation use cases and business logic.

  • Rimedo Labs demonstrates the integration of the QoS-based Resource Allocation xApp (QRA-xApp) into the open source SD-RAN Near-Real-Time RIC from ONF. The solution highlights the opportunities to control the xApp via the policies through the A1 interface as defined by the O-RAN ALLIANCE, which enables manipulation of the behavior of the corresponding RRM algorithm based on the current strategy coming from the SMO.

  • University of Málaga demonstrates the need to identify a feedback mechanism in the O-RAN architecture for the joint management of radio and virtualized resources by the inclusion of a vRAN cross management entity that interacts in the SMO with a video quality optimization rApp before sending a configuration change order via the O-RAN E2 interface. The demo proves how commands sent in the form of radio parameters through the E2 can be self-defeating without a computer-radio aware entity.

  • VMware demonstrates how VMware Energy Savings rApp, powered by VMware Centralized RIC (ie; NonReal-Time RIC), minimizes power consumption in Open RAN deployments by detecting cell traffic usage and powering down unused capacity cells without impacting overall UE and network performances.

  • VMware and Intel demonstrate how to leverage fully virtualized RAN to monitor and dynamically control resources available in RAN slices. The solution uses Intel FlexRAN L1 PHY SW, E2SM-KPM and E2SM-RC libraries, VMWare Distributed RIC and demo xApp to modify PRB allocations per UE and guarantee negotiated performance levels (SLAs).

  • Vodafone, Intel, Keysight, Radisys and Wind River demonstrate a new design and verification framework designed for dynamic closed-loop power management of O-Cloud resources in multi-vendor Open RAN systems in live networks. Using Vodafone’s network traffic profiles, the demonstration showcases resource optimization to achieve energy savings without impacting customer experience.

  • Vodafone, Juniper Networks and Parallel Wireless demonstrate real-time radio resource management in a live O-RAN network with Juniper RIC and Juniper/Parallel Wireless rApps/xApps. These rApps/xApps enable real-world use cases that deliver better user experiences with improved economics.

Open RAN demonstrations at MWC Barcelona 2023 include

  • 4 members of the 5G WIN consortium (RunEL NGMT, Parallel Wireless, Ceragon and Pente) partnered  under the Israeli Innovation Authority to demonstrate at MWC 2023 an Open RAN compliant Ecosystem. The demonstration video shows and End to End 5G Private Network using O-RAN open fronthaul interface between RunEL O-RU and Parallel Wireless O-DU and O-CU as well as Ceragon Backhaul and Pente Networks  Core.

  • Aarna showcases O-RAN services and management orchestration of Rebaca’s O-RAN simulators and an automation framework to validate O-RAN specification-based test cases with O-Cloud on a hybrid cloud infrastructure from Red Hat. The O-Cloud infrastructure is validated using VoerEir´s “Touchstone” software to accomplish independent performance assessment and optimization.

  • Analog Devices and Keysight demonstrate energy efficiency measurements from an ADI O-RAN radio unit reference design using Keysight's O-RAN measurement environment and showcase significant energy savings using advanced sleep mechanisms in the ADI radio chipset. Since the Radio Access Network (RAN) consumes 70-80% of total energy in cellular networks, optimization in the O-RU is critical to reducing the carbon footprint.

  • Analog Devices and Marvell demonstrate an advanced 5G Massive MIMO Radio Unit (RU) design that supports high antenna counts and multi-gigabit per second throughput for both integrated RAN and Open RAN deployments.   • Analog Devices, VIAVI and Rohde & Schwarz jointly demonstrate O-RAN WG4 fronthaul conformance. Analog Devices 8T8R O-RU reference design and development kit is validated by VIAVI’s automated TM500 O-RU tester with R&S SMW200A vector signal generator, R&S FSVA3000 spectrum analyzer and the R&S VSE signal analysis software.

  • Synchronization is one of O-RAN network key challenges.   • Comba showcases the first-of-its-kind full brownfield compatible Multi-RAT O-RU, featuring GSM, UMTS, LTE, NR, NB-IoT and LTE-M support. The last pieces of the puzzle for a one-to-one replacement of legacy RAN, the IoT/M2M RAT support in form of NB-IOT and LTE-M, has been added since last year- demonstrating the power of the software defined radio platform.

  • Deutsche Telekom, Keysight and Radisys jointly showcase a novel approach designed to achieve energy savings and resource pooling gains for O-RAN systems in an automated, closed-loop manner.  Using DT’s traffic profiles, the demonstration shows CPU resources scaling to dynamically provide the appropriate capacity for vDU and vCU under different loads.

  • A short cybersecurity presentation created by the Fortinet PM team and narrated by Pablo Molinero, Sr. Director Telco Product Management at Fortinet addresses the potential application of cybersecurity elements in an O-RAN  environment.   • Intel is showcasing an end-to-end 5G NR system demonstration, including O-DU and O-RU capabilities. The demo includes their N6000 Acceleration Development Platform as a virtual Cell Site Router (vCSR) connected to an O-RU platform leveraging Intel’s O-RAN/1588/Low-PHY and DFE solutions code-named “Sail River” running on Intel’s power efficient Agilex FPGA.

  • SUTD, Keysight and QCT jointly demonstrate an Open RAN cyber-assessment framework designed for security and resilience testing of O-RAN systems and components. This framework leverages Keysight’s O-RAN security test suite to validate QCT’s O-RAN based OmniRAN solution using a highly parameterized threat-centric attack injection methodology designed by SUTD.

  • Telefonica, Juniper Networks and Keysight demonstrate O-RAN Fronthaul Transport over a multi-hop packet-switched network using Juniper ACX Series routers for O-RAN fronthaul, Keysight Novus IxNetwork O-RU/O-DU emulators, and Keysight Metronome GPS timing to validate O-RAN Fronthaul Transport interoperability and performance including timing and synchronization, latency, and jitter.

  • VIAVI and AMD demonstrate testing of an OAI O-DU/O-CU with the VIAVI TMLite  that does both UE and O-RU emulation. This demo is for performance testing of the OAI O-DU/O-CU over the O-RAN fronthaul interface with multiple UEs showing KPIs such as the UL/DL throughput.

  • Viettel showcases its newest O-RAN demo towards the future of 5G called Massive MIMO 32T32R. This demo will test the 5G commercial UE OTA with Viettel 5G NSA gNodeB, which runs in Intel X86 COTS Server integrated with Viettel Outdoor Macro O-RU 32T32R, all built on O-RAN Category B architecture. UE speed test give DL: 1066 Mbps (4 Layer) and UL: 60.8 Mbps (1 Layer).

  • Viettel showcases an end-to-end Macro 8T8R system based on O-RAN Open Front-Haul. This integrated system is verified using a commercial UE/sim card, Viettel’s public network, UE Emulator from VIAVI, support SU-MIMO 4T4R up to 1.7Gbps for downlink and 150Mbps for uplink.

  • Viettel showcases a 5G commercial UE with Viettel 5G NSA gNodeB, which is running Viettel’s CU/DU software on the same Intel x86 server and integrated with Viettel’s Mirco O-RU, all built on the O-RAN IP/UDP architecture. The O-DU and O-RU are connected through a transport network. This is the first step on the way to Viettel’s C-RAN solution.
