On January 24, 2024, ETSI published seven new standards adopted from the O-RAN ALLIANCE through the ETSI (PAS) process. These ETSI specifications cover the O-RAN Architecture description and the O-RAN A1 interface, enabling intelligent Radio Access Network (RAN) management and control features through the RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC).

The publishing of O-RAN specifications by ETSI illustrates the global move towards O-RAN and advances the O-RAN ALLIANCE’s mission of transforming the RAN to be open, intelligent, virtualized and fully Interoperable.

The new set of O-RAN specifications include:

• ETSI TS 103 982 V8.0.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN Architecture Description v08.00 (O-RAN.WG1.OAD-R003-v08.00)
• ETSI TS 103 983 V3.1.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: General Aspects and Principles (O-RAN.WG2.A1GAP-R003-v03.01)
• ETSI TS 103 985 V1.1.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: Use Cases and Requirements (O-RAN.WG2.A1UCR-R003-v01.01)
• ETSI TS 103 986 V2.1.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: Transport Protocol (O-RAN.WG2.A1TP-R003-v02.01)
• ETSI TS 103 987 V4.0.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: Application Protocol; (O-RAN.WG2.A1AP-R003-v04.00)
• ETSI TS 103 988 V5.0.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: Type Definitions (O-RAN.WG2.A1TD-R003-v05.00)
• ETSI TS 103 989 V3.0.0 (2024-01) – adopting the O-RAN A1 interface: Test Specification (O-RAN.WG2.A1TS-R003-v03.00)

O-RAN ALLIANCE is preparing to submit more of its specifications to the ETSI PAS process to recognize additional parts of the O-RAN Architecture as ETSI specifications.
